Recalibrating

After a hectic work day Friday, I grumpily spent $100 to get a new tire on my car to replace the flat one.  I was getting tired of putting air in it every few days.  While en route to get my new tire, it started sleeting a little.  It wasn't much, just enough to remind me that Old Man Winter is on his way into town.  Luckily, I got these new boots to keep me warm until spring:

So cute and comfy, and they were only $39 at TJ Maxx--Score!

The new boots and the colder weather got me to thinking about my Pig training starting in January. Training for a marathon in Cincinnati through the winter months isn't always pleasant.  I've gone out to do my long runs in snow, rain, ice, freezing temps, high winds--all of it.  I think it of as a kind of survival training.  Like in the movie Dodgeball, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."  Well, if you can run in 8 degrees with snow on the ground, you can run a marathon in May in the rain."

Training hasn't started yet, though, so this weekend I decided to take it a little easy on myself for my long run.  It was in the 20-30 degree temperature range yesterday morning, so I opted for the treadmill instead of going outside and freezing my tush off.  While some people find the treadmill boring, I don't mind it.  Plus, my upcoming Vegas half marathon is going to be flat, so I don't really need to train on hills at all.  Treadmill worked out fine, and I got some quality tv watching in.

The run was decent, except for the fact that my Garmin is a big, fat liar.  When I changed the battery last week, it recalibrated itself and told me that I ran 12 miles in 1 hour 46 minutes.  That would have been the most amazing run of my life.  I guess I'll be heading out to a track this week sometime to get it back to normal, although I have to admit I kind of liked thinking I was that fast for a little while.   Now if only I can find a bathroom scale that does that...
